How To Paint Formica

Painting a Formica work surface? This VideoJug and Aspect Maintenance video explains everything you need to do to get the job right!

All right my names Tom. I work for Aspect Maintenance. I'm a painter and decorator.

And I'm going to show you how we would paint, or over paint on a Formica work top. So for example Formica is like a kitchen counter work top. What you need to make sure before you put any paint on top.

or whatever finish you want.

is that you put an appropriate primer on top.

This is a Zinsser primer. It's shellacked based so it sticks to pretty much anything. It dries in about 45 minutes and once you've put that on.

you have to make sure it's properly over coated.

you can then put your next coats over the top and they should stick nice and firm to the work surface you're going to use.

So first of all just dust off the work top make it that there's no grease or stains on top. You could put it on with a brush or with a roller, a mini roller; it doesn't really matter as long as you've spread it evenly across the surface. It's basically going to stick to that plastic surface and bond tightly.

And so when you've come to put your finish paint on the top, that's going to adhere properly to this Formica work top. Otherwise you're just going to have it peel straight back off. But once the RESA primer's dried on the Formica work top you're then free to put your finish coat on top.

We'll let that dry and you put color on top of that after you see, so you can actually see how it sticks to the surface. And that's basically how you paint a Formica work top.
