How To Paint Kitchen Cabinets:If you are one of those do-it-yourself types and would like to paint the kitchen cabinets yourself, then this video is tailor-made as it gives good tips for the painting of cabinets and in addition, it gives valuable piece of advice for looking after your wooden counter top.
My name is Tom, I am a painter and decorator for aspect maintenance. And I am going to show you how we would finish just a wooden counter top. And also, if you look at the paints, kitchen cabinets, furnitures etc.
, these are the stuff, well, you just to need to remember first of all, if you are painting onto these shiny surfaces like this, it's going to need what we call wood melamine primer. So,it is something that prepares this surface to be over painted first. Because if you try and paint on this with normal oil based undercoat or gloss or egg shell, it's not gonna stick.
It's gonna just peel of straight back. So once you put a melamine primer on it , it usually sets two coats. Leave it to dry and then you put your undercoat on.
And your top coat obviously, you can choose whatever color you like. It's gonna take quite a few coats, just bear in mind that it's quite labor intensive. So if you're going to do kitchen units, so what we got here for, it's going to take you probably five coats before you got it to a stage where it looks finished.
So, it's going to take quite a lot time. With the work top here, this is just sanded back. It's a wooden work top which usually, you could varnish it.
Work tends to look nicely after, now just start to oil it which basically protects the wood against grease stains and any food or whatever you put on the top, it stops it from getting into the grain quite as quickly and damaging the wood. The oil is a very flat finish, it won't come up very shiny and hide loss like a varnish. Just remember that if you are oiling your works, you are going to need to keep doing every four to five weeks, it's what they recommend.
You might opt to leave it longer but you will have to go back to it every now and again. You could put the oil on just with the rags or if you got a dish cloth or a flannel. Cutting it into pieces, you soak the oil into that and then you just work it into the grain over and over.
If you do that, probably the first time, two or three times, it's going to take a few coats. Just let the wood soak in the oil. That's going to give you a nice even finish and then all you need to do is go back to that.
After four to five weeks, when it starts to discolor or if you think it's looking a bit bare, you just put another coat over the top just to keep it nice and sealed. And that's how you look after a wooden counter top.
