How To Patch Drywall
This film will show the right way to patch drywall. Learn to plaster, replace, fill, and cover the seams on walls. Make a wall look like new without the huge costs by learning how to patch drywall.
Step 1: You Will Need
a keyhole saw,
a putty knife,
some drywall compound or plaster,
sandpaper,
extra wallboard,
Mesh Adhesive or Drywall tape
a drill and drywall screws,
a t-square, and a blade. Okay, now let's begin.
Step 2: Determine the size of the hole.
Small holes from nails or screws can easily be repaired with a putty knife and plaster, but larger holes need more material to support the patch. This hole will require a new piece of wallboard
Step 3: Cut New Hole
Using your t-square, measure and cut out a new square around the hole. This will give you a clean area to work in.
Step 4: Replace the drywall
Using your t-square or the piece of old drywall you removed from the wall, measure and cut a new piece to fill the square hole. Place the new piece in the hole and fasten it to the studs with drywall screws.
Step 5: Cover the seams.
You will need to cover the seams with drywall tape or mesh. Add a thin layer of plaster, smoothing it down with your putty knife as you go. After the first coat dries, scrape off the rough, raised portions of the plaster with sandpaper and coat it again. You may need to use a few thin coats until the plaster dries as flat and smooth as possible. Remember this is your new wall, it shouldn't bubble out. After you have given the plaster a final sanding, you are ready to repaint the area. It may take a coat or two for the area to blend in seamlessly.
