How To Perform A Gravity Defying Ring Trick
Professional close-up magician Peter Jest shows you how to perform a mini illusion with a finger ring and a rubber band. Very effective but easy to do.
Step 1: Obtain Your Props
I’m going to show you a little impromptu trick that you can do with a rubber band, a nice stretchy one preferably, and somebody’s finger ring. Preferably one that’s broad like this. A gentleman’s finger ring works best. It has a little weight to it and some width here.
Step 2: Set Up The Trick
You can demonstrate how a gentleman’s finger ring can defy gravity. You place the ring onto the rubber band like so. Stretch it out. Just ask them to watch the ring. There it goes. Traveling up the rubber band.
Step 3: Baffle Your Friends
It's a inger ring that defies gravity. And of course people will be looking for magnets or invisible thread but there’s none of that. There’s just a finger ring and a rubber band
Step 4: The Explanation
Let me explain how this works. When you put the ring onto the band and stretch it out you keep at least half of the rubber band, or as near as you can, hidden between your thumb and forefinger. This is hidden so you are stretching the band from here, not from here.
Therefore the ring goes on. You stretch the band out. Maybe give it a twist so it’s nicely together. Now you keep this hand steady, but gently release the pressure between your thumb and forefinger and the rubber band will creep out of your hand very slowly.
The effect is it looks like the ring is moving up the rubber band but in fact the ring is staying put and it’s the band that is moving and it looks just like this.
Step 5: Done
Now release the pressure and the ring begins to move. It’s quite weird. It's a gentleman’s finger ring defying gravity.
Hope you like it. Give it a try. And remember, at the risk of repeating myself on other videos I’ve done, the method is not important, how you present it is. So put some time and effort into finding the right presentation for you, build it up, and you will impress people. Thank you for watching.
