How To Perform The Bill Tear Trick

Step 1: Welcome to Easy bar tricks

Hi and welcome to yet another bar trick from Easybartricks.com. In this video I will show you a very nice trick that you can do with any bill. In this case I am using 100 Danish Crowns, which is my local currency. But you can use any bill you want.

Step 2: How many holes?

OK, first I will show you the trick and then afterwards I will explain to you in detail how to perform it. So take a close look at this bill. I am going to fold it once. I am going to fold it twice. And now I am going to tear a hole in this bill. So you see here I will actually tear a real hole in this bill like so. And now the challenge is for you to figure out how many holes will there be in this bill when i open it. Will there be one hole? Two holes? Three holes? Maybe even four holes when I open it up? OK. Have you made your guess? Alright, let's see. The thing is there are no holes in the bill at all.

Step 3: The torn and restored bill:

That is the torn and restored bill from Easybartricks.com. Now let's see in more detail what actually happened here and why you can produce the illusion that the bill is restored, cause actually it isn't. If we look at it closer up you can see that there are actually holes in the bill here. You can see that. And there is another one there. So we actually have some holes in the bill.

Step 4: The illusion of magic:

The thing is if you hold it out flat like this and at a bit of a distance its very hard to see those holes. It looks as if there are no holes in the bill at all and you give the impression that the bill is restored.

Step 5: Creating the illusion:

OK, so how do you create this illusion? Well, you say that you fold it once and you do. And you fold it twice. And then you tear...you actually do this tearing. You tear it. whoops, just gotta fold it right like so. And then you tear it. And you actually do that. Here is where you produce the illusion because you will just fold this last part and you will hold on to it with your thumb. And that will give the illusion that you created a hole.

Step 6: Slight of hand:

Now when you do it, you present it like, ok we are tearing it. Ok now....there we go. Just pretend like you actually tear it off and throw it away. So you can produce a good sound. And you can cover the hole with your index finger and your thumb like that and actually pretend that you are tearing that last bit off and throw it away. And now you can hold with your index finger to hide this line that is a bit more straight. It doesn't look like a teared bill. So just cover that a bit with the index finger.

Step 7: Confuse people:

And now to confuse people you will start asking how many holes do you think there is. This is just to confuse people because there are no holes when the bill is opened. But it will build an expectation and people will be looking for a hole when there are none at all, which is surprising. They will be even more amazed. So it's a good idea to build up this expectation that there will be one or two or several holes in the bill because it will amaze them even more when there are none.

Step 8: Maintaining the illusion:

So when you unfold it, you just do it like this. Cover it with your index finger. On the backside you will straighten that bill out with your thumb. Hold it up. Unfold it the second time. Keep covering here where the hole is. Straighten it out a bit and open the bill and hold it out like this. It will look as if it is completely restored.
