How To Plant And Grow Avocados From Seed

You need to know exactly how to grow avocados from seed, the procedure, the climate in which it can grow, in order to produce your own avocadoes.

Today, I'm going to show you how to grow avocados from seed. The avocado pear is a sub-tropical evergreen tree. They can grow up to 10 to 15 meters tall.

The easiest way to propagate avocado plants is from seed. So, the first thing we need to do is extract the seed from the fruit. So, cut the fruit in half as if you were going to eat it and the seed pops out.

There you go. Give it a bit of clean and the next thing we have to do is to soak the seed in water. Now, the water has to be between 40 and 52 degrees Centigrade.

So, we check it with a thermometer and we soak the seed for 30 minutes. So, once the seed has been in the water for 30 minutes, we take it out. With a clean sharp knife, we cut off approximately 1 centimeter of the top pointed end of the seed like this.

So, there's our seed with the top cut off. The next thing we need to do is to dip the top of that womb we've produced, we need to dip that in fungicide. It stops any nasty fungal diseases from harming the seed.

Put the seed into some seed compost that I've prepared earlier in this pot here. What we do is we put the seed in and the top of the seed; the womb that we've produced has to be just protruding about the top of the compost. There you go, like that.

The seed will take approximately four weeks to germinate so a little shoot will pop up from the top of that womb and then germination needs to be at between 20 and 25 degrees Centigrade. So, after a few weeks, for four weeks, usually, the seed will have germinated and a little shoot will pop up, out of the top. Once that shoot is about 30 or 40 centimeters tall, if you live in the right sort of climate, with a minimum temperature of about 20 degrees Centigrade, you can plant out the young plant.

The site where you grow the young plant needs to be in full sun, well drying soil and the temperature needs to be a minimum of 20 degrees Centigrade. You can't grow avocados in areas where you get frost. So, that's how you grow avocados from seed.
