How To Plant Snowdrops 'in The Green'

Stella Fear from Holland Park in London shows you how to plant snowdrops 'in the green'. This refers to planting snowdrops when they are fully grown rather than from bulbs.

Step 1: You will need

  • Snowdrops from a nursery or garden centre
  • A trowel
  • A watering can with a rose attachment

Step 2: Choose a site

Snowdrops should be planted in partial shade in moist soil. They can be planted at the front of a border, under trees or in lawned areas. The plants will spread across the site and should flower again for several years.

Step 3: Water

Lightly water the snowdrops before planting. Don't flood the plants or use a hose as this may damage them.

Step 4: Plant

Dig a hole in the soil the same depth as the height of the plant pot. If your snowdrops are planted too deep, they will rot. If they are too high, the roots will be exposed and the plant will die.
When the hole is the right depth, gently remove the plant from its pot and place it in the hole.
Gently draw the soil around the plant and press it down with your fingers to firm the plant into the ground.

Step 5: Water

Lightly water your plants after you have finished. The compost should be kept moist but not waterlogged, so only water again when the compost feels dry.
