How To Plant Sweet Pea Plants
Sweet peas make wonderful cut flowers with a great scent. David Ferguson, head gardener and property manager for the National Trust for Scotland at Greenbank Gardens, shows you how to sow and grow sweet peas.
You Will Need
- 1 pencil
- labels
- sweet pea seeds
- 1 dibber
- 1 file, or sandpaper
- multi-purpose peat free compost
- 9 inch pots
- 1 watering can
Method
Fill the pots to the top with compost. Scratch the seeds with the file or sandpaper, or soak them over night. Make three holes about 1 inch deep with your dibber and put 1 seed in each hole and cover over with earth. Write the variety of plant and the date of planting on the label and stick it in the pot. Water the seeds, then leave on a bench with good light until they have germinated.
After about 14 days your sweet peas should have germinated and should be growing steadily. When they have 3 sets of leaves, pinch out the growing tips to get a bushier plant.
