Hi. I'm going to show you how to plant some vegetable seeds. First, you need to sieve some ordinary garden compost.

Get out all of the big lumps. Then, take an ordinary seed tray; fill it with the sieved compost. Firm the soil down a little, not too much; just make a nice flat surface.

You need to water the compost first to make sure it is damp. Take a packet of vegetable seeds, open them up, shake them down so that they are in the bottom. Shake out some seeds into the palm of your hand.

Sew them thinly, into the top of the compost. It can be quite difficult to see the seeds because they are usually black. Don't worry if you drop them a little bit close together because as they come up, you can always thin them out.

Tip the spare seeds back into the packet; you can always do a second sewing. You can either cover the seeds with another sieving of compost, not too much, just about a quarter of an inch. But I like to use this, it's Perlite, a very light material, allows water to the seeds and it stops the top of the soil from drying out so the seeds are not trying to push their way through the top of a hard crust of soil.

You can buy it in any garden center in a large bag like this. I just smooth it over the top of the surface. Not too thickly because you don't want to exclude the light from the seeds.

Make sure you've got an even covering, water lightly again over the surface, over the top of the Perlite, then you take your seed tray and you place it in a propagator until the seeds have germinated, then you can move them back out into your greenhouse or you corf rain. And that is how you plant vegetable seeds. .
