Step 1: Victory against Global warming.
On this great spring day I’m putting together a victory garden, a victory against global warming. Right now I’m laying out the plants that I want to put in this one 4 x 8 raised bed.
Step 2: Yukon Gold potatoes
I’ve got my melon, a row of tomatoes and some green beans. For the rest of the bed I’m going to plant potatoes. I’ve got some Yukon Gold potatoes and some Russet potatoes. Potatoes are really really interesting to grow.
This is how your seed potato comes. It kind off looks like a regular potato but its not, it’s a seed potato. What I’m going to do, I’m going to cut this up and break it up so I can have multiple plants.
Step 3: Planting the potatoes
Now when you do this you want to have at least two eyes per piece of potato that you’re going to plant. We’ve got so many eyes here we can probably split this up into four. I’m going to plant four rows of potatoes so I need eight starter potatoes for the four rows. There, look at that, that’s why its called Yukon Gold.
Now I’m going to place the potatoes, and basically I’m just spacing them out evenly along my 4 x 8 raised bed. Great, now I have everything placed and I’m going to start planting. Now for the potatoes, you want to plant them a minimum of three inches. The deeper you plant them the more potatoes you’ll get. These are going to be two rows of the Russet potatoes and then two rows of the Yukon Gold potatoes.
Step 4: Raised beds are useful
One great thing about using raised beds in your garden is that you very rarely have to bend over and all you need is this small tool.
Now I started a lot of seedlings indoors this winter to give me a jump-start on spring and getting some fresh vegetables available for my family. But these potatoes you can’t really start, you can’t transplant them, you have to plant them directly in the ground where you’re going to harvest them from. Ooh look at that, so many worms, look at this guy.
Well I got this bed planted in no time and I’m going to be best friends with all the vegetarians in my neighborhood.
