I'm just going to discuss a few ideas about the drum set and demonstrate simple techniques that you can use on your drum kit, so today I'm just going to be talking about how to play basic grooves on the drum set, I think the first thing that is really, really important before actually playing grooves really it's how your going to set your drum kit, it's not because I'm using that setting that will necessarily work for you as well, you've got to think about well you know your height, the type of music you're playing, the way you move behind the drum kits and how all of this will affect the sound, make sure your comfortable, make sure everything is at the right height, at the right distance and that your stool feels comfortable and yeah its basically, it should be as comfortable as being behind your desk at home or in your favorite walking chair reading your Sunday news paper, that's basically how it should feel.

So the first thing I'm going to play, its something that you have probably heard a billion times already and I would recommend you listen to Billy Jean for instance by Michael Jackson, it's a pop rock groove with a bass drum on the first and third beat, the snare on the second and the fourth beat and the hi hat will be playing eighth note, something like that.

That's very basic you can probably play that at different tempos I'll probably do the same thing now where I lead it faster, pop music generally, I say pop music but anything goes, rock could be funk, could be hip hop, could be any of those other things and we will feature most of those other things, we will feature producing a strong snare on to and fro so that will be your leading voice really, the bass drum will be mixed a little bit underneath it and the hi hat, and that can be true for the right symbol as well, will be probably be a little bit lighter so you would get something like this.

Obviously from then on you can just really make the groove different just by adding some embellishments so for instance a few bass drum strokes, so I'm going to play that now, so there are many, many different ways to play the ghost notes, the last thing I'd like to play is basically use all this three ideas I've developed here, the basic groove, the basic grove with ghost notes and finally the same thing with hi hats acts as embellishments. And that's how to play drum grooves.
