How To Play A Finger Tap Scale On The Guitar

This is the correct way to achieve performing a finger tap guitar solo in the style of Eddie Van Halen. Learn some basic guitar scales that you can practice at home or in the park.

Step 1:

Classic Manoeuvre

Have you ever wanted to play guitar just like your favorite guitar heroes? Well in this video we're going to instruct you on how to perform one of the classic maneuvers. The finger tap. In this video, we'll show you the proper way to perform a finger tap skill. Ready? Lets get started.

Step 2:

E-String

First off you need to find the fifth fret of the high E string. This is where everything starts. This is where the scale is going to start and end.

Step 3:

Eighth Fret

Next, you're going to need to find the eighth fret. That's where your pinky is going to go. Once you've started the pluck of the string and started the scale this is your next step up to mash down on that eighth fret with your pinky.

Step 4:

Twelve Fret

And last, you need to find the twelfth fret. The twelfth fret is where the scale is going to end and also where it’s going to start back over at the fifth fret again.

Step 5:

Finger Tap

To begin, you pluck the string with the fifth fret mashed down. While the string is resonating you hammer on to the eighth fret with your pinky.

And then, you hammer on to the twelfth fret with your pointer finger of your strumming hand, releasing your pinky. Now you have a clear shot back down to the fifth fret.

Flick your pointer finger off to create the sound of a plucking string again back to the fifth fret. And then go through the scale once more. It’s that simple.

Step 6:

Practice

Now all you have to do is work on your speed. Once you get your speed right you'll be able to make the same sound of a lead guitar riff from Eddie Van Halen. It just takes a little practice.

that was terrible, i am a music theory major. you had no idea what you were talking about. i can do better with 4 finger tapping than you can with simple minor triad, and thats just sad.

I don't think it was "not well explained", maybe he doesn't know what words to use and when. It's just that (and most guitarists will agree to that) there are things that can be simple in mind but at the same time, difficult to explain by words. It would have been better if he had put his 'drive' on, explained how to do it AT THE SAME TIME he was playing it, slowly at first then gradulally building up speed until the final result. Overall, yeah there are much better and more explicit videos on youtube. Watch this video ONLY if you already know how to do tapping. lol

It's not very helpful for beginners when you descibe a broken-chord or arpegio (in this case Am) as a Scale.

Not that good at all. Not very well explained and your technqiue at the end was rather sloppy. You should of used Eruption as an example and also others player. Eddie VH wasn't the only person to use tapping - Check out Joe Satriani's Midnight or any of Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen. Alot of them have great tapping in.
