How To Play A Forehand Serve With Two Types Of Sidespin

British and Irish champion Jason Sugrue demonstrates how to play a forehand service with two types of sidespin. The table tennis serve is the only shot that you have complete control, so use it wisely by learning how to add sidespin!

Step 1:
-
Stance
-
There's no right or wrong way to stand when you serve. Just make sure your position is comfortable and that you can get into a ready position quickly. The orthodox way to play a forehand serve, is to stand, knees bent, body leaning forwards, at the backhand square.

Step 2:
-
Rules
-
The rules state that the ball must be behind the white line and must raise 6 inches into the air when thrown. Your palm must be flat and the throw upwards must be vertical.
-
Step 3:
-
Strike
-
The aim is to strike the ball as close to the table top surface as possible so that the ball doesn't go too high over the net - which would allow your opponent to attack your service.
Let the ball drop from the the throw and make contact close to the table service as possible. Go around the left hand side of the ball in a pendulum motion to generate side spin. When it bounces it will turn this direction. To make the ball bounce the other way, simply go around the right hand side of the ball. When it bounces, it will turn this direction.

Step 4:
-
Re-position
-
After hitting the serve get yourself into a ready position so you can take on the opponents ball.
