This video provides a solid basis for anyone interested in playing roller hockey. The video goes over necessary equipment, how the game is played, beginning techniques, rules, and more.
Hi, I'm Stuart Thomas. I'm here at Roller City, and I'm going to teach you how to roller skate. I'm going to talk to you about roller hockey.
Some people call it skate hockey, and these are the tools you're going to need. It's quite a special sport, so you're going to have to find someone who deals with the whole equipment. You're going to need a stick, a board to practice with, hockey skates, shin pads, knee pads, and probably a box.
When choosing your hockey equipment, you're going to have to get it suited to how you play. So it's best to speak to the guys who are sending it to you and can advise you on what you need to suit your type of skating. Hockey skates are completely different from your everyday skating for a rink.
They have a lower track to stop the ball from going in between your skates and you tripping over. The stoppers are closer to the floor, so you get quicker response on the starting and stopping. You'll also find you have much harder wheels.
Sometimes harder wheels on a rink will stop quicker than the softer wheels. They're much tighter than the normal skate, so they're made of leather, so you tie them up really tight to your feet, almost like a second pair of trainers. So once you've got your stick, your ball, and your skates, and your padding, you're pretty much ready to go.
Once you play roller hockey, you'll find that it's five men to a team. You'll have four outfield players among goalkeeper. The four outfield players will only play like a box-shaped defense or attacking, or a diamond-shaped defense or attacking, depending on how the match is going.
A lot of skaters have to be quick on their feet when playing hockey, because it's a very fast-entering game. It's very quick. You're always on your toes, and you're stopping and starting all the time.
It's important to be able to skate backwards when playing roller hockey, because that way you can keep the people in front of you. It's important that when you can play hockey, that you can skate backwards also. When you're skating backwards, you're keeping the opposing team in your eyesight.
It's no good turning around and not being able to see what they're doing, so you need to be able to skate backwards, and have good ball control as you're skating backwards, just as it is going forwards as well. When you're playing hockey, you'll find that you won't be standing so much upright. You're a lot lower, you're knees are much more bent so that you're arms are holding the stick correctly, so you can control the ball a lot better, and a lot faster.
Standing up straight, you'll only toughen the end of the stick, and you'll never get a good ball control when you do that, so once you're a lot lower, you'll be able to control the ball a lot better by skating backwards and forwards. Once you've got that going, you'll be then taught how to pass the ball to each other, giving nice correct passes, pushing the ball, and coming back to. Once you've got that going, you'll be able to pass the ball between the four of you, and hopefully attack the goal and score.
Roller hockey is a non-contact sport. A lot of the time, you can get mixed up with people hooking your skates and actually going for the ball. There's a ref for that.
Let him decide. Of rules are: you're not allowed to bring the stick above your shoulder, hook other people's feet, barge, or take anybody out. Once you've got the ball, there's no kicking the ball or keeping it in your possession so none of the other skaters can't get it.
Once you've mastered the rules, you'll find that you play well as a team and you'll be able to go on and score great goals. And that's how to play roller hockey. .
