How To Practice Calligraphy
How to Practice Calligraphy is a video providing the starting steps of developing good handwriting. It is shown how to start practising calligraphy and the things to remember. Actually to practise this, you must start with pencil and write carefully. By using these tips, anybody can develop good handwriting.
Hi I am Veiko from the Calligraphy Studio in London.
You need to practice your letterforms many time with pencil before using the dip pen. If your S or any other letterform does not look good, go over and over the shape with a pencil.
When you practice with pencil don’t press too hard. Use this pencil line scale to understand the correct pressure. Very gentle pressure, a little more harder, more harder, more harder, more harder press a little more harder and harder. Try to create a scale of line thickness.
From working with pencil you will have learned not to press too hard. This is good practice for using a pen.
Now I have gone through all the letters I can do exactly the same thing with my pen. First start with a small nib, keep your pen at a 30 degree angle and make some vertical lines. Don’t worry if your hand is a bit wobbly. Don’t press very hard, just keep going and release the pressure as you reach the bottom of the line. Keep the start and end of the lines very neat, don’t rush.
Next practice making a circle. Start at 11 o clock and curve round to five o clock. Then repeat starting at five o clock and finishing at 11 o clock. Keep your pen angle at 30 degrees to make sure the letterform is correctly balanced. It is easier to practice the letters in their family groups rather than in alphabetical order. For instance wide letters, narrow letters, square letters etc.
