Hi, I'm Jamie Crittall from Beech House Veterinary Centre in Surrey and I'm here to talk to you about dog breeding. Hi, my guide for preparing for canine pregnancy. Most important thing is do your research.

Make sure that your bitch is fit and healthy not just from a physical point of view, but also with regards to inheritable diseases, and your veterinary surgeon can help you with that. Find the right stud for your dog. Again, the internet can help you, your breeder of your bitch can help, and of course, your veterinary practice.

Make sure you've got all of the right supplies in place. Once she's pregnant, you'll need a whelping box and whelping kit. All this information you can find on other videos on Videojug and the most important thing is that your bitch is the right weight, being fed a complete balanced diet designed for a pregnant dog, and that she's the right body condition score.

If she's overweight, she'll produce a smaller litter. If she's underweight, she'll produce a smaller litter of smaller puppies, and your vet and the practice can help make sure she's at ideal body condition score in the peak of fitness, and make sure you have all of the understanding and information that you need to know about what's normal and what's not normal. Again, your veterinary practice can help with that.

You want to know what time she's likely to give birth, and what are the signs you need to look out for if there are problems, and make sure that you have developed a really good trusting relationship with your veterinary surgeon, because you may need to come in, but you need to feel happy that that's the right thing if there are problems because sadly, not all pregnancies work out absolutely fine. I know that to my own personal knowledge when one of my bitches didn't have a successful birth and she needed to have a Caesarean section, and having that good relationship with your vet, of course, make the whole thing much more pleasurable. So, to wrap that up, the three most important things - make sure that your bitch is fit and healthy being fed the right food.

Make sure you found the right stud dog for your bitch, and finally, that you know everything that you need to about what to expect throughout the pregnancy and also for the puppies that hopefully you are going to have.
