This video is for those of you who want to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome. So what is carpal tunnel syndrome? Well, when the ligaments or tendons, or the sheet around them in your wrist become inflamed they can sometimes pinch on the medial nerve which runs between them to the hand and when that happens, you can get numbness, tingling or weakness of the hand. So what can cause carpal tunnel syndrome to happen? Well there are a number of things but the most common thing would be a repetitive hand movement that would involve pinching or griping with a flexed wrist, so certain jobs are more prone to getting carpal tunnel than other like for example, lab workers, mechanics, admin workers, golfers, people like that they are more likely to suffer from carpal tunnel.

Other things that can cause inflammation of the tendon or ligament or the sheet around them would be certain medical conditions like diabetes or thyroid problems or sometimes rheumatoid arthritis and also tissue swelling generally such as in pregnancy can cause this to happen. So how can we prevent it? Well, the number one thing would be to avoid these repetitive movements if you can. If your job does involve a lot of pinching or griping with a flexed wrist then you could try alternating the hands that you use to do these tasks.

I would also try to avoid resting your hands in the same position for long periods of time, such as if you're typing because this can also aggravate the carpal tunnel. If you're over weight then losing weight will also help you. If you don't think that you have any obvious causes for carpal tunnel syndrome it would be important to go to your own doctor to investigate any underlying cause such as diabetes or thyroid problems.

So I hope that you have found these tips useful and remember if you do have any symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome, you should really go and visit your own doctor.
