Hello there, my name is Doctor Gemma Newman and I'm a GP based in West London. Today, I'd like to give you a few great tips to improve your general health, and prevent a variety of problems. This video is for those of you who want to know how to prevent pimples.

Now, pimples or spots are a really important problem because they can affect your self-esteem and your self-confidence. Unfortunately, they're caused by a lot of different things. Your genes, your underlying skin type, your hormones, and also the accumulation of oil, skin cells, and bacteria in your skin.

However, if you know that you are prone to spots or pimples, there are a few things that you can do to improve and minimize your risk. So, the first thing I would suggest is to wash your hand towels and your facial towels regularly, and also to wash your pillows regularly. This is basically going to be good to improve.

When you're going to bed, if you have long hair, tie it back against your head so that you don't have any greasy hair in your face at night, and I'd also make sure that you wash off any makeup if you're a woman before you go to bed. Now with regards to makeup, it would be important to try and buy water-based foundations, rather than oil-based, and it's also important not to share makeup brushes between people because this is more likely to transfer bacteria from one person's skin to another.

Make sure you wash any makeup brushes that you use regularly as this will also help to improve your skin. Don't over wash your skin, because this can irritate spots that are already there, so make sure that you try to avoid drying out your skin by over washing. If you're exercising, try to shower soon after exercising because sweat mixed with oils under the skin are more likely breed bacteria, so it's important to wash soon after exercise.

Drinking plenty of water and having a healthy diet full of vitamins and minerals is also going to be really important to help to hydrate your skin and regenerate your skin, and although this doesn't prevent spots it's definitely a good tip for general health. Now as I said before if you do have spots, it does affect your self-confidence, so please don't just leave it. Make sure that you do go to a doctor for treatments because there are plenty of things available.
