How To Propagate Strawberries

A gardener as well as a horticulturist, in this video, shows how to propagate fresh strawberries which you can apply in your garden at home.

Today, I'm going to show you how to propagate strawberries. The easiest way to propagate strawberries is by layering. Now, layering is when a plant sends out a stem from the main part of the plant, it sends out a shoot, horizontal shoots like this.

And at certain points along the shoot, the plant will send out a new shoot, can you see the new shoot here that is developing? So, what I am going to do is I pin down that new shoot in some compost in a pot like this. And after a few weeks, that new shoot will root itself in the pot. So, here are some plants that I started a few weeks ago.

I planted up some pairing plants in this pot, and they have send out new shoots, as you can see here, and I pinned them down in the pot, the new shoots. As you can see, how they develop into much bigger new plants, what I then do is to cut off the shoot that which it joins, which makes the pot, and I now have a new plant in the pot. And as you can see, this one has already sent out a new shoot that we can develop another strawberry plant from.

So, once the new strawberry plants have rooted, you can see the fresh new roots here on the pot, on the plant I have just taken out of the pot. We can plant them in a different location away from the main strawberry patch where we have taken them from. The main strawberry patch may have plants in it that are carrying viruses.

So if we want to start a new patch, we dig a hole, put in the new plants, firm the soil around them. And we've got now the beginnings of a strawberry patch. And the whole process starts again.

They will send out a new runner, and we can cut those off and start a new plant again. So, that's how we propagate strawberries. .
