Step 1: Protecting PCs during storms:

Good day. My name is Doug, and this is my best mate Joe. Today we're going to show you how to save your computer in a storm. We have a big nor-easter coming in. Crikey, you look good in that hat. Its a little itchy.

Step 2: Unplug your computer:

#1 Unplug your computer from the wall. It's not enough to turn your computer off. If lighting hits your power or phone line it could cause severe damage to your computer. Most people lose their computers to lightening through the phone line plugged to the modem. So you need to remember to unplug your modem and computer from the wall.

Step 3: Install surge protectors:

#2 Surge Protectors. At the bare minimum purchase a surge protector for your computer. It helps prevent an electrical surge back onto your system. Lightening will most likely take out your computer through the phone line. So be sure to plug your phone into your surge protectors first then into your computer.

Step 4: Avoid water damage:

#3 Water Damage. Unplug all the cables from your computer and monitor. Cover your computer and monitor with plastic. Even lift your computer up off the floor to protect it from flood damage.

Step 5: Back up your data:

#4 Back Up Your Data. Always save your important files to an external device. You can use a USB or fire wire drive. You can burn your information to a CD-ROM or DVD you can even back up to an IPod if you need to. You gotta tilt it a little. See you gotta tilt it a little. Yeah.

Step 6: Back up your battery:

#5 Battery Back up. A battery power supply will help protect your computer from power loss. If you do lose electricity, the battery power device will help you safely shut down your computer.
