Mobiles or cell phones are the items most liable to theft. So find out how to best protect your phone. VideoJug's advice includes factors such as security locks and marks, registering your mobile phone with the network company, and recording your mobile phone details.

Step 1: Keep details

Make a record of all your phone information and keep this in safe place. Include:
your phone number,
the make and model,
colour and appearance details,
the pin or security lock code
and finally the IMEI number. This stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity and is the 15 digit number unique to your phone, it can be found by looking beneath the battery or by keying in *#06#

Step 2: Security lock

Always use the security lock code, or PIN feature, to lock your phone. This will make it less valuable to thief and deny them access to personal numbers stored on your SIM card.

Step 3: Register

Register your phone with your network operator. If your phone is stolen report the loss to them immediately, using your IMEI number they will be able to block your hand set and account details. This will prevent anyone from using the phone across any network - even if the SIM card is changed.

If you are in the UK, the Home Office and Police advise you to also visit www.immobilise.com. This is free to join service allowing you to register your equipment against your contact details. If recovered, the police are able to access this information and return your goods.

Step 4: Security mark

Use an ultra violet pen to print your post code and house number onto both your mobile handset and battery. This makes it easily identifiable as your property if lost or stolen.

The pen marking will wear off every couple of months, so reapply it when necessary.

Step 5: Be aware

Mobile phones are valuable, both to you and potential thieves, so take care when using them in public. Avoid having them on display, or talking on them in busy areas where they can be easily snatched.

Finally, never leave your mobile unattended, it only takes a second for them to be grabbed. Keep it secure, and out of sight.

I'd say the best way to prevent loss from being mugged or having your phone pick-pocketed is to not love your phone. To do so you simply have to own a cheap phone, using it for calls and texts only (not as your birthday diary or planner as well) plus the things mentioned in the film. That way, if your phone gets stolen, you can shrug off the £25 loss, go to the shops and get yourself another one. The most expensive thing that goes missing with your phone is your nerves/trauma if you are very attached to your phone and use it for everything (mp3 player, emails, photos of your kids etc).

please! u can get it unlocked at the local newagents or mobile phone shop AND get a new sim for £10. it takes 10 mins and then u can put any sim in the phone unconditionally. and as if u are ever gonna get ur phone back when it gets stolen! when its gone - its gone. waste of time doing all this stuff. even if u immobolise it - the theives can break it and sell parts like battery, memory card.... and if u immobolise it u can still use infrared and bluetooth. none of the stuff mentioned except the keeping out of sight acutally works!
