How To Protect Your Privacy On Facebook

In the ever growing battle to protect your private information from the creeping claws of corporate capitalism you may have heard of Beacon, Facebook's sneaky advertising platform. It informs friends when you make purchases from external websites, tracks your shopping habits, and even uses you as a recruit in advertising campaigns. Follow this advice to keep you information in your own hands!
-
Step 1:
-
Block Third Parties
-
Click on the privacy link in the top right corner of your profile. Once in you Privacy overview page scroll down and click on the 'external websites' link. This will bring up a page with one tick box in it. By ticking this box you can stop external websites registered to Facebook's advertising network from informing friends of your purchases via your news feed without your permission.
-
Step 2:
-
Stop facebook from tracking your shopping habits
-
Thanks to Beacon, facebook can still track your shopping habits after you've logged out of facebook itself as long as you're buying from a company on its advertising register. To stop this don't click the 'Remember Me' option when signing in to Facebook and regularly clear your computer of cookies. Consult the help section of your software's Internet Browser for more information on how to do this.
