In this video, a surf champion tells you the correct procedure for putting a leash on a surfboard. He also explains what happens if it's done wrong.
In this video, I'm going to show you how to attach a leash to a surfboard. So, this is our leash. This is a short board leash because obviously, I'm going to put it on my short board.
You've got different lengths of leashes for different surfboards, so on the nine foot long board, for that, you can actually get a longer leash because you actually travel up and down the board. So, you need a longer leash. But for this board, a short board leash.
So, your leash will come in two parts. You've got your string and you've got your main leash. This part, you attach to your leg and this part attaches to the board.
So, first off, we need to get our string. You've got your string. On the back of every surfboard, you've got a leash plug.
So, what I do here is I thread one end of the string through, a little bit quicker, like so, okay. So, we've got it like that. Put them both together.
Hold it about here. Swing it around. Push both of the ends through the knot and then pull your leash.
Okay, at this stage, the tiny rope on the end, it's crucial that we put a knot on the inside of the board. If I put my knot here, if you get a big wave and your board gets carried away from you, the string can actually go through the board so we've got to make sure the knot is on the inside of the board like so. So, once it's on and you're happy with that, just pull it nice and tight.
Okay, so that's good. This excess bit of rope here, you can actually snip off, okay. Once you've put your rope on your board, there's no need to have to take it off, so just leave in on that board.
So, we've got our leash now. You've got to make sure you attached it at the right end, so the big end is for your foot and this end is to attach to our board. So, all leashes are the same, Velcro.
So, undo the Velcro, wrap your rope, thread the end through the Velcro strap, through the rope and then fold over. Fold over again and then put the roll that's sticky over it. Make sure it's all nice and firm like so and you're ready to go.
And that's how to put a leash onto a surfboard. .
