My name is Dirk Laubscher, and I've been a physical therapist for over the last ten years, and I've been working on Olive Street for the last six, and today I'm going to talk to you guys about the causes and the management of back pain. How to relieve left side back pain: It's important to understand where the pain's actually coming from, if you look at the spine, so this will be your left side, most left sided back pain originates from facet joints, now those are the joints that basically is formed between one vertebrae on top of the other one. And as you can see, they make sort of forward and backward movement possible.
Usually, and this is, I'm generalizing, but usually in the case of left sided back pain it's because that muscle, I'm sorry, that joint is actually compressed and tight. It's a very annoying pain and it can actually refer pain up or down but also you get the muscle to spasm up, so how to find relief of that, is by, I've created here, is by mobilizing the actual stiff joint, so basically we use our hands and we mobilize it, we loosen it up for you. Sometimes it is very difficult to do it yourself, but when it's loose, it's very easy for you to maintain the looseness.
As you can see also, it can be from a disk on the left hand side that comes out and pushes on the nerve. Again, this, with physical therapy, we can address that and also with some exercises we can address that. A very good one for you to relieve that is by lying on your back and basically what you do is bend your knees and roll your knees side to side.
So basically, this way. What you want with that joint is you want to loosen it up and again, knees bent, curling side to side, is one of the best ways to do that. Just to recap, left sided back pain is usually caused by this joint, which is the facet joint, it tightens up and we treat that, you find relief by actually mobilizing it, manipulating it and which is what we do and also with some exercises and repetition of exercises. .
