How To Relieve Sinus Pressure

In this video, a physician discusses home remedies for unpleasant sinus pressure, and what to do if the problem persists despite their use.

Today, I'm going to talk about how to manage sinus pressure. Step one: what is sinus pressure? Sinus pressure is the pressure that you feel behind the eyes or in the nose or the cheeks and it's pretty common, especially around winter time. To try to get rid of it, some basic things that you can try at home are going to be steam inhalation.

By standing in a room with a hot shower running, or popping your face over a bowl of steaming water and covering your head with a tea towel, that can be a really great way to open up the air passages and relieve some of that sinus pressure. Other things you can try are things like warm face packs. You can also try saline nasal drops.

Step two: if sinus pressure is a long term problem for you, it's possible that you've got something like chronic rhinosinusitis which is long term inflamed nasal passages. Often, that has an allergic component, and in that point, you might want to see your doctor who may recommend things like antihistamines. These come in the forms of nose sprays or tablets.

Although the tablets can be a bit sedating, the newer ones tend to be less sedating. Other things that you can try are nasal decongestants. However, I would say with these that it's important not to use them for more than three days, as if you use them long term, they can actually cause rebound nose congestion.

Step three: if your sinus pressure is persisting, or you're not really sure why you've got it, pop along to your GP. It might be the case that you've got an infection and you need a course of antibiotics. Otherwise, they may want to try something like nasal steroids.

But again, they should be prescribed by a doctor. Also, your GP can offer different types of antihistamines that aren't available over the counter. They can offer antihistamines that are longer lasting.

And that's how to treat sinus pressure.
