My name is Dirk Laubscher. I've been a physical therapist for over the last ten years. I've been working in Olive Street for the last six, and today I'm going to talk to you, guys, about the causes and management of back pain.

How to relieve thoracic back pain? Now, the thoracic part of your back is basically the middle part of your back. Alright and this is where most of your ribs come around and they attach. It's a very stiff area, okay, and a lot of people, a lot of people get pain in this area.

As I've described before, the main cause is bad posture, that's basically, you know, the main thing that causes. So, how we relieve that is by actually mobilising the stiff areas. Again, you get these joints that form between two vertebrae passage joints, what you want to do, you want to make sure that they're nice and loose and like I say, we use different mobilization techniques for that to loosen it up.

We also have to look what's going up in the neck. A lot of time, there is a lot of stiffness in there, you have to address that as well and have to address this part of your body as well in order to completely relieve the pain here. And because of the tightness and bad posture people have, you also have a lot of weakness.

Okay, that is mainly due to lack of extension. Alright, so a very good thing to do is basically, just a nice tip, when you're at work, you have to put your hands behind your back and just to bend backwards. Okay, over the back rest.

This is a little bit low but if your back rest comes a bit higher, just bring it backwards. Okay, alright. Another very good little hint is, put your hands behind your back and make sure you pull your shoulders back, you can actually stand and do this and you do as you straighten your arms, put the chest out, pull the shoulders back and most times, sometimes you can hear a few clicks in your upper back.

All that is, is just your spine loosening up. And that's a very, very, very good you know, it's a very easy thing to do. It doesn't take a lot of time but very effective. .
