My name is Dirk Laubscher and I've been a physical therapist for over the last 10 years and working in Harley Street for the last 6, and today, I'm going to talk to you guys about the causes and the management of back pain. How to relieve upper left back pain. Upper left back pain is quite common in people who do office work.
It's an area that's a very stiff area. You get the area where the ribs attach to the spine. That'll stiffen things up.
People who get pain in that area, it's usually because there's tightness in that joint or there's tightness in the muscles that overlay that area. How we get rid of that in a very effective way is doing deep tissue massage combining that with trigger point massage which is very localized pressure on the tight area where the pain is coming from, and also by mobilizing your thoracic spine. Your thoracic spine is the middle part of your back.
If we loosen that up, on both sides, and we loosen up the facet joints which are the joints between each vertebrae, and we loosen that up, we get very, very good results. What you have to do then, after we've done that is to extend your back and to make sure the muscles of your back are strong enough. And that's why we give exercises, very specific exercises, for that part of your back.
If it does go a bit higher, the same thing applies. We try to get rid of all the trigger points in your neck, mobilizing the neck and the shoulder area. .
