Three-time Welsh surfboard champ Lloyd Cole advises viewers as to what to do in the event of damage to their surfboards. Here, Lloyd explains the components of a fiberglass board, noting the importance of repairing even small dings. He suggests a few options in approaching board repair, including obtaining a do-it-yourself repair kit, available from reputable surf shops or, in case of more severe damage, suggests letting a professional handle it.
Now, this is a foam and fiberglass board, okay. It's durable to a point, but if we drop it or if we hit it ourselves, it's going to ding, okay? Now, the outside of the surfboard is made of fiberglass which protects the foam on the inside from getting waterlogged and actually starting to rot. So, when we ding our boards, it actually breaks through the fiberglass and exposes the foam.
Now, we definitely don't want that, so we need to repair our board. So if you get a ding in your board, take it to your local surf shop. They can actually sell you a ding repair kit, it's got the full instructions in there to repair your board yourself.
Now, if it's a more severe ding, like if you've actually snapped the nose off your board, or you've actually taken a big chunk out the side of your board, a lot of surf shops or local surfboard manufacturers will be able to repair your board for a fee, so you actually take it to them, they'll give you a quotation, you can leave your board there, go back a few days later and it's exactly like new. So, there's a few different options there you can choose. So, that is how to repair a ding on your surfboard. .
