How To Reset Internet Explorer 7
This video provides guided instructions on how to resolve issues with Internet Explorer 7 such as crashing, hanging, closing unexpectedly, and slow performance. These problems are often caused by add-ons and other customizations that are incompatible with the browser.
This is a quick and dirty way to resolve a lot of Internet Explorer 7 problems, and the best part--it's only 7 steps!
Step 1: Slow Internet Explorer Browser
Does your Internet Explorer browser seem slow? Does it seem to crash, hang or close unexpectedly? Or do you sometimes receive an error dialog? If you do, you are not alone, this happens a lot because just about any web site you visit stores cookies and files on your computer, and sometimes add-ons to the browser tool bar. Sometimes these files and add-ons cause freezing and crashing.
 | When you reset your browser, you remove all your customizations that get added on over time when you use the Internet. Some customizations are good to get rid of because they slow things down but some are helpful.
This means:
You lose your Web site passwords.
Your list of Web page Favorites and Cookies are removed.
Your Web page history is deleted.
Add-ons and tool bars will be uninstalled. |
Step 3: Close all open applications
Close all open applications, EXCEPT the one playing this video.
Step 4: Open a new Internet Explorer window
Open a new Internet Explorer window the way you normally do.
 | You may use the Internet Explorer or ‘e’ icon on the quicklaunch bar at the bottom of your screen, or the ‘e’ icon on your desktop, or even the icon on the start menu. Simply use the method you are comfortable with, and continue. |
Step 6: Open the Internet Options dialog box
Click "Tools" on the browser toolbar, then click "Internet Options."
Step 7: Go to the "Advanced" tab
Click the "Advanced" tab on the Internet Options dialog box.
Step 8: Reset Internet Explorer
Click the Reset button on the bottom right side of the dialog box.
Step 9: Close the Internet Options box, and close all browser windows
Click "Close" on the confirmation box, and then click "OK" to close the Internet Options dialog box. If you receive a message stating that you may need to restart Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect, click "OK" and close all Internet Explorer windows.
Step 10: Check whether your problem has been resolved
The last step is to check whether it worked. Open a new Internet Explorer window and begin surfing. If you know that this problem occurred by visiting a particular Web page or by following certain steps, try that now to see whether the Internet Explorer problem still occurs. If the problem occurred intermittently, you might have to visit different Web pages or use Internet Explorer for several days before you can determine whether the problem is resolved.
Just one last thing. If this didn’t work or for that matter even if it did. There are two things that you also should do:
1. Use Microsoft Update to keep your computer up-to-date. Just follow the instructions at: http://update.microsoft.com
2. Make sure you have a scanner that scans and removes malicious software. You can try Microsoft Onecare's free safety scanner. http://onecare.live.com/
