Roasting chestnuts is a surprisingly delicate procedure. In this brief video tutorial, a professional cooking instructor explains how to do it properly.
Hi, there. I'm Matt from the Underground Cookery School, and today I'm going to do a video cookery lesson for you. Well, I'm going to show you how to roast my nuts today.
I've got these chestnuts here, and it's really simple to do. It is quite fiddly, though. Some people just buy them already just prepared and frozen in the supermarket, so I guess it's allowed.
But what we're going to do is just lay them in a tray like this. You don't want to leave them in the oven for too long. I'm going to put them on 180, there we go, for about ten minutes.
And when we come back, I'm going to show you how to peel them. Right. We're going to get those chestnuts out of the oven.
They've been on about 160 for ten minutes or so. It's so easy to get these wrong, and also you do need to let them cool down, which I actually did before, but I'm cheating a bit because if I cooled them down and took them out of the oven, you'd have to wait for about ten minutes. And that wouldn't be very good.
I'm using a razor-edge knife just to peel away the chestnut, like so. The problem with cooking them is, if you overcook them, they explode, and then they just get chestnut all over your oven. And if you undercook them, you obviously can't peel them.
So, it is quite a delicate balancing act. But once you've peeled them, they are absolutely delicious. So, I'm just going to finish off this whole lot, and then we're going to plate these up. .
