When you want to get a crowd into a game or you need a quick hitting play to change the momentum of a game, then you want a backdoor alley oop. An alley oop is an offensive play in which one player throws the basketball up near the basket to a teammate who jumps, catches the ball in mid air and either lays the basketball into the basket or slams it home. Follow these steps from NBA veteran Tracy Murray to learn how to run a backdoor alley oop play in basketball.

Step 1: Set The Play

The backdoor alley oop play is run when you have a guard with the ball on the perimeter. On the opposite side your most dynamic jumper will be on the wing. This play works best when that player is being overplayed by his defender. In that case another offensive player will flash to wing to set a backpick for the jumper. The jumper will peel off towards the basket where he will catch the basketball in mid-air and slam it through the hoop.

Step 2: Back Pick

Back screens are set just like down picks except they are accomplished in opposite order. The pick comes from below the basket to the perimeter. Then the player can peel off towards the basket for an easy backdoor basket.

Step 3: Alley Oop

The guard on the perimeter will pass the basketball towards the basket where the jumper catches the basketball in mid-air and slams it through the basket.
