How To Safely Remove Large Branches
Steve Redman from Holland Park in London shows you how to safely remove large branches from trees or large shrubs. A great video that will definitely improve your garden.
Step 1: You will need
- A handsaw
Step 2: Undercut
The initial cut should be made away from the 'collar', or 'branch bark ridge' where the branch meets the trunk. Starting from the underside of the branch, saw upwards until you have cut halfway through the branch.
Step 3: Overcut
Remove the saw and make a second cut 3-5 cm further up, moving down from the upper side of the branch.
Allow the weight of the branch to pull itself away from the tree so that it tears naturally.
Step 4: Tidy up
The cut will heal more quickly if it's flat so make a final, clean cut angling the saw away from the trunk to allow rain to drain off easily.
