How To Sequence

This instructional film will show you how to create a sequence using a particular drum machine. Whether you are starting a band or learning for fun; be sure to know how to sequence on the drums.
-
Step 1:
-
Music Producer
-
Hi! My name is Frankie Wiggins Jr. I’m a music producer and re-mixer. Today, I’m going to go over a few basic steps on how to make small sequence using an MPC 2000.
-
Step 2:
-
Features
-
Some key features on the main screen of the MPC 2000 are: number one, the sequence field, which tells you the name and the number of the sequence you’re creating, the tempo field which allows you to change the tempo of the sequence, the note-value field where you can change the note value of the sequence, the time signature, right now the time signature is at 4/4, and the bars field which allows you to change how short or long you want the sequence to be.
-
Step 3:
-
Load The Sounds
-
You know, with that in mind, we can get started. Before you can begin to try and putting on a sequence you have to load the sounds up into the machine. If you noticed, the sounds are already uploaded into the machine. So, I’m going to start for ½. So we’ll find the half. Some nice sound in half right there.
-
Step 4:
-
Recording
-
When you hit record and hold on record and play at the same time, and if I do that, I’m going to hold down the top tempo and load repeat button while holding down the head button. And it’s going to play at the tempo of 98 and at eighth note for two bars.
So here we go, hold on record and play, there you have it. So we have a highest play in at 98 at eighth note.
-
Step 5:
-
Snares
-
So we’re going to repeat the same steps for the snares. Let’s find out a nice sound in snare. It sounds like a nice snare right there. So, let’s change the note value to sixteenth note on the snare. And we’re going to hold down record and play at the same time. Now, the snares is included in the sequence.
-
Step 6:
-
Kick Drum
-
Now let’s do the kick drum. Sounds like good kick drum right there. So I’ll keep it on sixteenth note, go to track three, and repeat the same step.
Now, you have the kick drum in there. So let’s play back the entire thing altogether.
-
Step 7:
-
Sequence Created
-
Just click and read it, it’s in your small dial sequence. Now you know how to create a sequence on your MPC, be on the lookout for part two of this lesson where I demonstrate how to sample.
