And where's the mention about cycling the tank? Completely missed out, as if it were not the most important part of setting up the tank. Without doing it, the ammonia that your fish produce will build up, as you have not matured the filter to cope with it by adding pure bottl ed ammonia, and letting it break that down. Ammonia is very poisonous to fish, and they will die. As simply as that.
When you set up your tank, left it to "mature" for a few days, a week, a month or a year, and your fish die mysteriously, ammonia build up will be the problem.
Fish are not easy to care for. It is a responsibility, and you should research thoroughly before even considering fish.

like with leads for your filter or heater its a good idea to have them come out of the tank above the water then down to the plug .
so the water wont work its way down and cause any probs .
or you could make sure your air pump has a non return valve .
so the water cant make its way down when the pump is turned of .
i think most pumps come with these and if your not sure check with your local pet shop to make sure .
never feel like a fool for asking most pet stores will be more than willing to help you out no matter what the problem .
hope this helps and good luck with your new fish :)

2 days is NOT long enough to leave your tank. You need to cycle it without fish for as long as 6 WEEKS to allow the bacteria in teh filter to mature. To do this WITH fish in the tank is cruel as it allows those fish to suffer burns from the ammonia and nitrite in the water.

Anyone that knows anything about aquaria knows that you cannot add fish after two days unless you want to kill them. It takes a period of WEEKS to properly "cycle" a tank. Though some people use "disposable" fish for this purpose (cheap tetras or mollies), you can buy bacteria to speed the process or borrow used gravel or filter material to jump start the growth of beneficial bacteria.

I feel so bad that I didn't find this sight until after I killed 5 fish. I now have 5 more that are doing fairly well but I'm having trouble with ph being to high. I'm using tank buddies but its not working. Any suggestions? Also I have 1 fish that spends its time hiding vertically at the top of the tank or in the greenery. I keep thinking hes going to die. Whats up with that?

Honestly, I have never come across a less informative step by step...

Honestly, I have never come across a less informative step by step ever! For those of you that are new to the hobby there is this thing called the “Nitrogen Cycle”, During this cycle toxic chemicals are produced that are deadly to your fish and although this sounds bad it is necessary so that your ‘aquasphere’ can produce/build up bacteria to neutralize it and support a safe and healthy environment for your fish. Oh and yes this cycle is necessary and unavoidable as these chemicals are also produced by your fish (poop) and decay (plant matter, left over food etc) so without a stable eco system the high toxicity levels will kill your fish or at best open your fish and tank up to sickness, which mostly ends in costly losses to the hobbyist not to mention the fish!!! For those of you who really want to set up a fish tank the Nitrogen Cycle in my experience takes 2 – 7 weeks, but is well worth it, research the hobby, learn from others experiences, I recommend deciding on your fish first, learn about there needs, create an environment for them, take it slow, start small and work your way up. There are many experienced hobbyists out there with very informative sites. To those of you who read this and get a tank and just throw some fish in there anyway, recall this when you flush your first one, and second, and so on. Also i find adding bog or drift wood helps lower ph and have also found backing off oxygen bubbles can help lower it to but that just my experiences

When i first decided to get a fish tank i decided on a 60ltr tank for tropical fish. I folowed similar advice as given in this step by step, waiting a week before adding fish, 5 a week for three weeks as per decided with salesperson when i purchased my tank. Within 5 weeks all but two of my fifteen fish where dead! During this time I went to my pet shop, described their symptoms and was given a tonic to treat what they concluded to be ‘fin rot’. I thought this strange as I would have expected ‘fin rot’ to be a disease where the fins rot which in my case was not so, but then they are the experts right? Anyway I died everything in my tank some shade of blue and my fish still died. It turns out that my fish where dying from ammonia poisoning, six months later I know this for sure, I have fishless cycled 2 tanks in this time with a total of 15 new tank mates and no casualties, both tanks are well on there way to becoming beautiful displays, very rewarding

This is a very bad explanation of setting up tank for any fish. As stated by others, the tank needs to cycle. Basically, you are creating a pond or looking at a another way, a septic tank. Bacteria need to grow to break down the waste from fish (poop and pee), dead fish and extra food. The base way to cycle a tank is to use feeder guppies. These guys are more hardy than other fish because no one takes care of them very well... after all they are just going to get eaten anyway. Get a dozen feeder guppies, which are less then $0.10 or less. What will happen is the tank will get a "fog" after a few days. This is a good thing. After the fog clears, your tank has cycled. Don't forget to remove any of the dead feeder guppies from the bottom of the tank or in the filter. Go slowly when adding fish. If you add too many at one time, you may induce another cycle (a bacteria bloom actually) and kill some of the more expensive fish you bought!
