Step 1: Aol.com
Go to www.aol.com (if you are in the UK it your browser may automatically re-direct to aol.co.uk) and find the word "AIM" either at the top of the screen or under this icon. AIM stands for AOL Instant Messenger. Click on this word and you will go to the Instant Messenger page.
Step 2: Download and install
Click this "Get it now" button to download the program. A small file will download to wherever your web browser saves downloaded files. Clicking on this program will begin the installation process. If Windows puts up any security alerts, allow them to continue the installation. When the process is finished, you can launch AOL Instant Messenger.
Step 3: Screen name & password
When the program is open for the first time, you will have to choose a screen name and password to log into the messenger. Fill in the details it asks for and when it comes to picking a name, you may have to choose another if your name is already commonly used. Once your screen name and password have been set up, you can enter them into the appropriate boxes on Instant Messenger. Once you have done this, a demo will run, explaining the basic features of the program.
Step 4: Add friends
To begin adding people to talk to, click on the "File" menu, then "Edit", then "Add Buddy". Here you can enter your friend's screen name, email address, or other contact details in order to find your friends and begin chatting.
