Step 1:
-
Set up water supply.
-
One of the most important things in your garden is your water supply. I set up a little watering station here and I've got 2 five-gallon buckets underneath here with water. I filled them with municipal tap water and I'm letting them set here. What is going to happen is, the chemicals that they use to treat the water are going to evaporate and the temperature of the water is going to adjust to the room temperature.
-
Step 2:
-
Avoid Chemicals.
-
I don't want any of those chemicals that they use to be in the water when I use them on my seedlings. I' m trying to grow organic vegetables and what that water is going to do is that it is going to kill some of the beneficial bacteria that I need in order for the organic process to actually take place. And the room temperature water is really good for the roots of my seedlings.
-
Step 3:
-
Use warm water.
-
Because we want to treat them well, we want to treat them like a baby and the number one thing you worry about when you're raising babies is: are they warm? So I want to use the warm water so it doesn't shock the roots of the plants when I pour the water in. So I'm going to do some watering and I've got my watering can here. I'm just dunking it in and filling it up with water, it is really, really easy.
-
Step 4:
-
Trim the roots.
-
I want to talk a little bit about seedling maintenance. I've got my little container here of cucumber seedlings, I planted them exactly seven days ago. They are doing beautifully and what I'm going to do is, I'm going to transplant each of them into their own little individual three inch pot. In the process of doing that, what I want to do is gently take the seedling out, and you see. . . look at those roots, I have tons of roots. I just want to take my scissor and I just want to cut the bottoms of the roots. I am going to take it and I am just going to cut the bottom of all the roots that I can see.
The next thing that I'm going to do is, I'm going to water all of my transplanted seedlings and then I'm going to start some more seeds.
