How To Set Up An Indoor Garden, Part Two

Patti plants seeds in the indoor garden.

Step 1:
-
Know your Veg.
-
Now we're going to go to the fun part, which is planting our seeds. I've got the basics right here. I've got some green beans, and these are actually bush beans. I've got some cucumbers, which are so amazing right off the vine and eating it fresh and raw. They're just fabulous. We also have these tomato seeds and these lettuce seeds that we're going to grow. Now the bean and the cucumber take around 50 to 55 days to harvest, and the tomato and the lettuce they take a little bit longer, around 80 to 85 days to harvest.

Step 2:
-
Planting the seeds.
-
All right, I'm going to start off by just making little rows here, and I'm going to kind of take the line just right there of the little shelving unit my mom gave me. I'm just going to make a little trench, it's not too deep, it's about half an inch. And I'm just going to plop them in. Pretty much around the time that I am going to transplant these into bigger pots is when I'm going to start some new ones.
-
Step 3:
-
Label your crops.
-
Now with my nifty label maker I'm going to label each tray with today's date and what's in each tray. I purchased these little galvanized bins, basically if any water gets on them they're not going to get rusty and the stuff inside isn't going to get damaged. In this one I have basically all of my seeds. In this bin I've got some little cardboard boxes that I'm going to use to plant some herbs. In this one I've got pretty much all of my supplies. I've got my label maker, I've got a soil test kit, I've got some herb food. I also have these great mats, and later on I'm going to show you what I'm going to do with these mats.

Step 4:
-
Creating extra space.
-
Now I've got a lot of space outside to grow vegetables this year. So what I'm going to do next - and this is going to be really amazing - I'm going to line the rest of these walls with extra shelf space and start all of my seedlings that I'm going to use and transplant into my outdoor garden beds.
