How To Sew A Coat Button

Hi, I'm Roz. I'm the owner of Sew Much Fun, where I love to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for sewing. One of the most annoying things is when your coat buttons fall off, and this seems to happen more and more, so you need to be able to replace your coat buttons.

A coat button comes under much more wear and tear, and often you wear a thicker thread when sewing it on. But thicker threads come in limited colours so what I suggest to make your thread stronger and more durable is that get your double thread and run a little bit of wax down the thread. This wax makes it more durable when it's actually being used in buttoning and unbuttoning the coat.

So you'll notice with the wax on the thread it moves out the fabric much more and it holds itself together more strongly. So when we're going to put the much bigger button on, again, we're still going to stitch through. We're not going to stitch it too tightly because we are going to do again some stitches around.

If your coat fabric is very thick, then you might want to put a matchstick between your button and your fabric in here, to make sure you have enough give between the button and the fabric to go around your fabric. We're going to wrap it round quite a few times this time because you're wanting quite a nice shank to help give you enough fabric space for the coat you're going to put on. And then you take it back through and you stitch a few stitches on the back.

Now you've got your coat done.
