How To Sew A Skirt

Create your own style with a skirt you made yourself! Use a few very basic sewing techniques to sew a skirt with an elastic waist band.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to make a skirt with elasticated waist. So, for today, I've chosen a really nice kind of elastic. I've got fabric here that's got a nice edge for the hem and you're going to need measuring tape to measure your waist for your waist band, and then you'll also need some poppers for the fastening, and scissors and pins.

Cut to your desired length, and again, fold half a centimeter in, and then tuck your raw edges under, and you'll have a two centimeter fold. And you can either use a sewing machine and top stitch it, or just use a hand stitch using a needle. Okay, once you have sewn both sides, remember to press that on and sew that.

There you have it, you've got your waist band fastening attached, and ready to attach the main fabric of your skirt. What I'm trying to do is just adding lots of pleats and pushing it, and just start sewing. Once you've attached the waist band to the main skirt, now you're going to want to attach the two edges together to close your skirt.

If you make sure the right sides of the fabric are facing each other on top, and all we're going to do is close this up with a one centimeter seam. So, to start again, a few stitches forward, and a few stitches backward to tack, and then just sew your one centimeter seam. And to finish, turn your skirt to the correct side and press that together and there you have it, a skirt with elasticated waist band. .
