How To Sew A Tote Bag

Make yourself or someone special this nice tote for a carrying bag or shopping bag. Made from a mixture of wool and felt, this bag is sturdy enough to serve for all the general carrying tasks you may need.

Hi. I'm Roz. I'm the owner of Sew Much Fun, where I love to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for sewing.

I'm going to talk you through making one of my favorite bags that I make in the shop, and also that I have as a kit that you can buy, and make, yourself, at home. It is made of a nice mixture of wool and felt, so it has quite a thickness to it, and it's different from one side to the other. So this design actually takes advantage of that.

So again, what we have is, we have two large oblongs, which we first of all sew together at the bottom. We just do the bottom seam first. And then, we have a cut piece, that we then stitch on top of the bottom piece, to give it more strength.

So again, we just have a line that we stitch on either side, making sure that that middle seam is in the middle. We then also, I've just designed a simple circle, but you can design whatever shape that you want to go on the front, or you can just leave it plain. So, I've done a little bit of a design, and I've sewn that on.

Now, we're using felt all the time. Felt doesn't fray, so you don't have to prepare it with interlining on the back. Once you've done that, you then sew both of the sides up together.

And unusually, we're sewing it so that you can actually see the seam, because sometimes on bags, it's quite nice to see this edge with your stitching showing. And because it's felt, again, it's not fraying. It comes all the way to the top, like that.

And then all you do at the top is, you roll down 10 cm, so you get a nice contrast of both sides of the fabric, so you can see that. So you basically then sew on your straps to the length, whatever length you want them to be. So, if you want them to be like a carrying bag, you want them longer so you can put them on your shoulder.

Now there's another thing I've added to this bag because I have a real problem with losing my house keys. So, what I've done is, I've made a little purse, again, out of the felt, with a zip, so I can place my house keys in that, and I've done a little strap that catches it around the handle. So that hangs just inside my bag, so I can always get access to my house keys without rummaging around in my bag.

So that is a really nice shopping bag or carrying bag.
