How To Sew Baby Shoes
Put your baby ahead in the fashion stakes by making your own little baby shoes.
Step 2: The Pattern
Print off the baby shoe pattern from the VideoJug website and cut out the three separate pieces; the heel, the upper and the sole.
Lay out your chosen fabric on a flat surface. For each shoe you will need 2 uppers, 2 sole pieces and one heel piece. So, double over the fabric and pin the upper and sole templates in place. Carefully cut them out. Pin the heel template to a single layer of fabric and cut out. You now have enough for one shoe, remove the pattern and keep for the second shoe.
Step 3: The heel
Fold the heel piece in half width ways. Insert a few pins along the fold to keep it in place. Putting them a right angles to the edge makes it easier to remove the pins as you sew. You are going to create a narrow channel to hold the elastic, to get the right depth lay the elastic on the fold and mark with a pencil just below.
Sew a running stitch to create the channel, removing the pins as you go. Snip off the excess thread.
Measure and cut off about 12 cm of elastic. Using a safety pin attach one end of the elastic to the end of the channel. Attach the other saftey pin to the other end of the elastic and thread it through the channel. Once it is all the way through use the pin to hold it in place. With your sewing machine, run a short stitch back and forth over either end to secure the elastic in place. It's a good idea to measure the heel against your babies foot to make sure it's neither to tight or loose before you secure the second end.
Step 4: The Upper
Place one upper on a flat surface. Pin your newly sewn heel piece edge to edge with the straight side of the upper, and likewise for the other side. Sandwich the second upper on top, and pin all layers together. Sew a line 1 centimeter in from the edge to hold all the layers together. Use a running stitch on your machine to do this. Flip the two uppers over to join each other - you can now see the shape of the shoe taking place.
Step 5: The sole
Place the 2 sole pieces together, and sit the upper onto top to form the shoe. Turn the whole thing over and pin all the layers together at the edges, you will have to manipulate the uppers a little as you do this to get a good shoe-like shape.
Set your sewing machine to a zigzag stitch and sew all the way around, taking the pins out as you go. Make sure you have caught all the edges in, and trim off any excess fabric. Flip the shoe inside out, turning out all the way to the seam. That's your first baby shoe completed! Now you're ready to make the second in exactly the same way.
