How To Sew On A Button

Watch this tutorial to learn the basic techniques to ensure that your button is sewed on properly.

Step 1:

Obtain A Button

First, locate the button that has fallen off your garment. Now, that's a bit of luck.
If you can not find it and you are using a new button, make sure it is of a similar size and color to the other buttons on your garment.

Step 2:

Prepare The Thread

You will need 30 to 40 centimeters of thread that is a similar or matching color to the garment. Don't use purple thread if the garment is white.

Step 3:

Thread The Needle

Thread one end of the cotton through the eye of the needle. When done, draw the thread down so the two ends meet.Make sure they are of equal length. Then put the two ends together and tie a knot.

Step 4:

Align The Garment, Button And Needle

Place the four-holed button in place in relationship to the other buttons and aligned with the button hole. Poke the needle and thread through the material starting on the reverse side and aim for one of the holes in the button.

Step 5:

Start Sewing

Now, pull the thread through all the way until the know prevents it from going any further. You might want to use a thimble at this point to prevent pricking your finger.

Step 6:

Sewing Technique

If the button has four holes, put the needle back through a diagonal hole. Then back up through the first hole again. And repeat the process five or six times.

Step 7:

Choose Your Pattern

Then do the same to the other two holes in a diagonal direction. And repeat the process five or six times so that it forms an X shape. But look to the rest of your buttons on your garment are sewn and keep to the same pattern.

Step 8:

Finishing Off

Sew until there is just a little bit of the thread left and finish with the needle on the underside of the fabric.Tie a knot by putting the needle through the material on the reverse side of the button and pull, but don't pull tight.

Step 9:

Securing The Button

Leave a loop and put the needle through this loop two times then pull tight. You can repeat this two times to be doublely secure.Cut the thread to free the needle and cut any excess thread from around the knot.

When using a thimble if it is too big breathe into it and this will help it stick onto your finger

Before you finish off, you need to twist the cotton a few times around the threads between the button and garment, to form a tiny column of thread for the button to sit on. This ensures a big enough gap to enable you to do the button up.

One more thing: There was no mention of the space, if any, between the button and the fabric. In the past, I have sewn a button, only to find that it was too close to the fabrick to button the shirt. Surely there should be a little space between the button and the shirt, or?

Super wonderful! Thank you. Now I know how to sow my own buttons, and more importantly, so does my girlfriend...
