It's difficult to create a consistent amount of slack for the neck by pulling it out as shown if you only rarely sew on buttons. My mother had a neat trick -- she'd sew a wooden matchstick in between button and fabric and pull the matchstick out just before winding the neck for 2mm slack every time.

I like the matchstick idea but unfortunately we have gas lighters ...

This was quite helpful, although it didn't explain what to do with the open end of the thread (it said to pass one end of the thread through the needle and pull halfway so that the two lengths were equal, but then what? (eg tie the two looose ends, etc). Also, when sewing through, what happens to the loose end)

I also could not follow the initial step. Looks like you forgot to mention how to knot the beginning end of the thread to the fabric, at the starting point. That step could be so intuitively obvious to the experts, that they forget to mention it. Or perhaps I did not watch closely enough? Otherwise, a great help. I think that I can figure it out. I have been sewing buttons on for 40 years, but by an admittedly inferior method.

I have been wanting to know how to sew on a coat button for the longest time, and now that my husband has torn off all of the buttons on his long leather coat, I was on the hunt for "how to's". This is by far the most comprehensive instruction I have seen. Video quality is perfect. I am now prepared to do my repair and excited to have learned another sewing technique.
