How To Sharpen A Calligraphy Nib
How To Sharpen A Calligraphy Nib: If you want to have a great calligraphy writing, then the nib must be perfectly sharp. You can make use of this video as it has all the techniques to sharpen your calligraphy nib on your own.
Hi I am Veiko from the Calligraphy Studio in London. When you buy a new pen it is square but with use the nib will wear out and the line it makes will become ragged and blobby. You will need a fine dentist quality sharpening stone and a magnifying glass with 10x magnification.
Moisten the sharpening stone with spit, then take the nib and press the uppermost side (i.e the non writing side) against the stone. Then maintaining a 45 degree angle gently rub the nib back and forth a couple of times.
Check the pen nib with the magnifying glass. In this example the nib is not evenly sharp and needs more sharpening on the right hand side. Sharpen again with even pressure. The sharpened line is now straight.
I will now draw how nib to show how it looks when it is sharpened.
Keep sharpening and checking the nib until it looks like this – where the angled writing edge is sharp and it is now able to create accurate thin lines.
