In this video, Bob Anderson, the world champion of darts in 1988, teaches you how to sharpen your darts! He even drops a few pointers to help you improve your game.
After a while of playing with your new set of darts, you might find out that the dart is bouncing out occasionally. Maybe you need to sharpen your dart, just a little. Several ways to do that.
One is to actually use a little dart sharpener like this which is very simple to use. Merely put it onto the point of the dart and rotate. Do that for all three darts as often as you feel you need to.
Now, I personally do not sharpen my darts very often. Because I play an awful lot of darts, the constant friction of putting a dart in the board and taking it out of the board keeps them pretty sharp. But I honestly believe the point of a dart should be slightly rounded, rather than needle sharp.
The reasoning behind that is simple. If a needlepoint dart hits a wire, it would make a slight impression on the wire and then bounce out. If it is a rounded point, the chances are it would glance off that wire and then hit the board and score.
Remember, darts on the floor do not count for anything. One tip I can give you, when you buy a brand new set of darts, the points are highly polished. I recommend strongly that you take a piece of hammering cloth or dart sharpener and just rub the sides of the points.
Just put a few scratches. You will be amazed at how that grips the dartboard when the dart enters the board. You will not get too many bounce outs.
That is how you sharpen a dart. .
