A slip stitch is one of the basic stitches required in sewing. This video gives you an insight how to do a slip stitch in an easy manner.
Hi, I am Roz. I am the owner of Sew much fun. I would love to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for sewing.
A slip stitch is what we use to hand sew our bends or hand sew things together. And normally what we are trying to do is to stitch on one side with barely any stitching showing, and on the other one we need some secure stitching. So I have got myself a double thread.
I put a knot on the end, and again whenever I am stitching anything by hand I will always do a couple of looser stitches so I know I am secure even if I put a knot. And then I am going to basically just pick a tiny bit up from one side and then I am going to just come along the fold on the other. So I actually don't see very much stitching, tiny bits on one side and then along the fold.
So you don't actually see much stitching, but obviously you would normally be doing so in an identical color thread. I am doing it in a slightly darker green thread, because that shows up more. So you can see the little stitches on that side, but normally you favor the same color so you wouldn't see them.
So again, tiny bits on that side and then come through along the fold, tiny bits through along the fold. Now, what project you are on depends on how evenly you do the stitching. So if you wanted to make sure that your hem holes are going to come down the toe you would do them quite close together, but if you knew that you could, if you are like hemming a cut, you could probably do it a lot further apart.
But the key to sewing is actually always doing it evenly. So I pick a tiny bit and then along the fold, a tiny bit and then along the fold, so you don't really sew too much. So on the right side it's got lots of little stitches which can disappear if you use the right color of thread, and on the other side you've got sewing up which is secure.
And that's how you do slip stitch.
