How To Sow Sweet Peas
Steve Redman from Holland Park in London shows you how to sow sweet peas by planting them in covered containers in late Winter.
Step 1: You will need
Step 2: Prepare the seeds
Using sandpaper, rub the seed coat opposite the small round scar which is called the 'eye' of the seed. This will help moisture to get to the seed and will help the seed germinate. If you're planting a large quantity of seeds, an alternative, faster method is to soak them in water for 24 hours before sowing.
Step 3: Sow
Sweet pea seeds can be planted in deep containers or 'grow tubes' which are containers used for growing individual seeds. Growing them individually will create a stronger plant. Fill the containers with compost. If you are planting several seeds in one larger container, place them 2-3 cm apart. Position the seeds 1cm deep in the soil, and water thoroughly.
Step 4: Cover
The containers should be covered with a sheet of glass, which will trap air and create a humid environment for the seeds to germinate in. Turn the glass every few days to allow air to circulate and moisture to escape. Store the seeds in a sheltered environment outdoors, indoors or in a greenhouse.
Step 5: After-care
The glass should be removed after about a week when the first shoots emerge. The seedlings will need to be kept in a sheltered environment protected from frost and rain for about 4 weeks until they are 3-4 cm high. After this they can be transferred to the garden.
Tips & Comments
Do they need to be sown in a sunny location or can they be planted in shade?
This looks really helpful. I'm going to give it a go and let you know how I get on.
