How To Speed Up Windows Startup

If your Windows PC is booting up slowly, there are some hints and tips you can do to speed up how quickly your computer starts. This film shows you some of the things you can do.

Step 1: Remove Remote Access

If it's a home PC, chances are you won't really ever need Remote Access, which is a way of letting tech bods fiddle with your computer from their computer, miles away. Flip it off by right clicking on Computer (or My computer) -> Properties -> Remote -> deselect “Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer” and select “Don't allow connections to this computer”

Step 2: Remove Unnecessary Fonts

Rumour has it that a large portion of Windows startup can be setting up all those fonts you've installed. Remove any you don't really need by going to c:/Windows/fonts and deleting any you're SURE you don't need.

Step 3: Keep Drivers Up to Date

Sound card, Graphics drivers etc etc should be kept fresh and up-to-date to ensure maximum quickeness at boot up- visit the manufacturer's website, download the appropriate driver for your hardware and install it.

Step 4: Disable unnecessary Hardware.

Why waste your computer's valuable thinking time by telling it to pay attention to the Soundcard if you never use it? Or the Joystick? Open the Device Manager, and DISABLE anything you don't need – be careful, and disable rather than uninstall.

Your PC should have regained some of its former startup glory, and it'll be like when you first got together. Why not watch VideoJug's film about speeding up shutdown, too?
