How To Spike A Volleyball
The spike is the most powerful attack shot in volleyball. It's the spike that gets a crowd going… and it can carry any team to triumph. Learn how to perform the spike in volleyball.
Step 1: You will need
- 1 Volleyball
- 4 Players
- 1 Volleyball Court
Step 2: Position Yourself
Position yourself on the attack line. That's the line that runs about 5 feet away from the net. Positioning is crucial when setting up for a spike... so be sure to be in the right place, which you will know by watching the setter.
Step 3: Start Your Approach And Jump
After the ball is set, start your approach. Before you jump, drop your arms down to waist level and bend your knees. Use both of your arms to generate force for your jump, extending both arms above your head.
Step 4: Hit The Ball
Raise your elbow above your ear and keep your palm close to your head. When your hitting hand pulls back, keep the elbow high and extend the hitting arm up. You want to make contact with the ball at the peak of your jump. Hit the top of the ball with the heel of your hand.
Step 5: Snap Your Wrist
Snap your wrist downward to spike the ball into your opponents court. Finish with your fingers over the top of the ball. Be careful not to "carry" the ball for even a second.
Step 6: Follow Through
Finish your spike by bringing your arm down across your body.
Step 7: Landing
When landing be sure to bend your knees to absorb the impact. Your feet should be shoulder-width apart in a balanced position.
