How To Spot A Bogus Caller

Most people who call at your door will be genuine, but this film will help you prepare for those who are not.

Step 1:

Stop

If someone comes to the door, stop and think before you open it. Are you expecting anyone? Has anyone made an appointment?

Step 2:

Check

If you don't already have one, fit a security chain and/or a peep hole to your door so you can check who the caller is. For how to do this, watch VideoJug ' How to fit a security chain' and 'How to fit a peep hole'.

Ask the caller to hold up their identification so that you can see it before you open the door.

Step 3:

Think

If the caller claims to be from a company and you weren't expecting anyone, call their company to make sure they are who they say they are even if they have ID. Always check. If the caller is genuine they wont mind waiting. Don't be pressured into letting them in.

Step 4:

Telephone

Don't call the number that the caller gives you themselves or that is printed on their identification. Instead, take the name of their company and look up their number yourself or call directory enquiries.

Step 5:

Leave

If you have let someone in and they make you feel uncomfortable or threatened, don't stay in the house. Make an excuse and leave. Go to a neighbours house and ask if they will come back with you or call the police if you feel threatened.

Done

Bogus callers are rare, but it's worth making sure you're safe

This is a place to comment on the video, not to dish out empty insults to others. Utter immaturity. The video does actually mention how to spot a bogus caller, because it mentions that a legitimate employee from a business would be willing to wait for confirmation. A bogus caller would become impatient and/or leave.

if it helps prevent home invasions... it is not a waste of time. here in the Montreal region we have a high number of home invasions and no.... not all canadians are stupid but we tend to open the door without thinking security first.

This isn't "How to SPOT a bogus caller" so much as what to do if you already suspect someone of being bogus, (to which the advice seems to be run away). Perhaps some tips on conmens methods or how to actually identify a conman by the way he talks.

This would be useful for a preteen or young teen staying at home alone. Keep in mind not everyone watching is an adult.

Just who was this video meant for?? Surely anyone with an iota of common sense knows not to open the door to just anyone. This was a waste of time.

Yeah, in the U.S. we just let anyone in our house. *sarcasm*
